PHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix police have identified the homicide suspect who was killed in a shootout with police after he fled the scene of another killing earlier this week.
Devin Montgomery pulled a handgun and fired multiple times at officers who attempted to confront him Thursday afternoon at an apartment complex, police said Saturday in a news release.
One of the officers returned fire and hit Montgomery, 23, who fell to the ground and was apprehended, police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. One of the gunman’s shots hit a police vehicle but no one was hurt.
Police say they had identified Montgomery as the prime suspect in the fatal shooting hours earlier of a man at a residence several blocks away. That man, 29-year-old Brandon Russell, also was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Both shootings remain under investigation.
